Freecycle ~ Waste Reduction

Who hasn’t heard the words, one man’s trash is another man’s treasure?

About five years ago, my sister told me about Freecycle and how she was able to give items away she no longer had use for. In fact, her family was also able to request the items that they needed.

Freecycle is a network which promotes waste reduction to help save landscape from being taken over by landfills. Their mission is to build a worldwide gifting movement that reduces waste, saves precious resources & eases the burden on our landfills while enabling our members to benefit from the strength of a larger community. They are all about keeping “stuff out of landfills”. You will find groups all over the United States, Canada and around the world.

We have been able to bless people with items we no longer needed and we have also been blessed in return with much needed items. Not long ago, I was able to receive a small coffee grinder which I use to grind up my flax seeds. We’ve also received a good dog crate earlier this year.

According to Freecycle, their network is able to keep 300
tonnes of rubbish from entering the landfills worldwide
- each and every day.

Although we give to charities, we also value Freecycle. You may be able to find someone who will have use for items that are not valuable to your local Salvation Army or Goodwill. This past summer we found people who were willing to take plastic nursery flower pots along with extra fill dirt. We’ve given also many other useful items.

In order to find your local Freecycle, click here. We are grateful for the people who volunteer to moderate the Freecycle groups. Although you may be allowed to join more than one group, the rule in my area states that it is preferred that your post be placed with your local group first. Each group has their own rules.

Remember if you choose to take advantage of Freecycle, whether you are giving items away or receiving items from your community, take precautions when arranging for pickup or delivery of items.

You may not always find someone to take your items or find what you need but it is always worth a try. It is another way to be a good steward.

  1. Before moving last year we were part of a large Freecycle network. It was very nice and we were able to get rid of many things I would have otherwise not known what to do with. It is so nice to be able to do that. Sometimes we picked up things that were less than desirable and I have heard a few horror stories, but these are not the norm at all. It has definitely been a blessing to us and many other families and I agree: it is a great way to practice good stewardship.

  3. Shalom Carmen,
Great Post! I love to recycle, we are big on hand me downs and thrift stores here. We love to give to places that in turn, give the stuff away for free. This is the first time I have heard of this Network, very cool!!!
