Well it seems the FDA has recently detected that this year's rotavirus vaccine batches of GlaxoSmithKlline and Merck are contaminated with a pig virus. According to Reuters, the FDA states that "it was safe for doctors to resume giving patients Glaxo's Rotarix and continue using Merck's Rotateq. The agency said there was no evidence the contamination caused any harm and the vaccines were important in preventing hospitalizations and death."
For those not familiar with rotavirus, it is a common and leading cause of diarrhea in children worldwide. It is also known to cause vomiting, fever and dehydration. After reading information in Neil Miller's book Vaccines: Are They Really Safe?(Copyright 2008) and information regarding Rotavirus on the Center for Disease Control (CDC) site, they both mention the treatment protocol should be to rehydrate by providing fluids.
GlaxoSmithKline and Merck also say that "some strains of the pig virus are believed to cause a wasting syndrome in young piglets, marked by diarrhea and an inability to gain weight, they are not known to injure humans." Hmmm how did they come to that conclusion?
An interesting finding in Mr. Miller's book under the heading Rotavirus is that even if a child were to receive the vaccine, he/she could still become infected with rotavirus since the vaccine was designed to protect against some of the strains.
There is so much information out there which can sometimes be confusing. How grateful I am to be able to turn to the All Knowing, All Powerful for much wisdom and discernment.
Looking back, I am happy we opted to not continue to vaccinate our children. Interestingly enough when talking with my sister one day not long ago, she made a point which never crossed my mind that so many of these vaccines are "unkosher" for our family since we follow the biblical dietary laws.
May we all continue to educate ourselves and pray for convictions.
